Sunday 15th

Well it’s Sunday now, a week that Lombardy is on lockdown, last week people were arriving, excited about their holidays (not many people though) only to have to leave that night or early the next morning. Yesterday it snowed a bit and there was nobody at all around. It is quite eerie, like a ghost town. I saw this foto in a paper and I thought it was so good, I really feel for all those who are working in hospitals. Last night there were 3,497 new cases, I hope we are almost at the peak of the infections.

In Livigno the lockdown is ok, at least we have the mountains, we can go for a walk, keeping a distance of course, when you go in the Food shops (Alimentari) you have to put gloves on and keep your distance, there is still plenty of food as well. Obviously there is the worry about how to pay the bills, pay the bank, when will tourism start again? I am worried about the summer, when can I open, will I be able to open? Will this effect tourism long term not just now? I think a lot of small businesses will disappear, unable to cope, unable to pay the bills. It’s easy to focus on the day to day living under lockdown but at the back of your mind is a big question mark, what is going to happen from now on..

A big thanks to my friends who have sent me videos of Italian people singing all together from their balconies, keeping their spirits up. some played instruments, I am amazed how united the Italians have become during this period, a real sense of community, maybe this will be a positive thing that comes out of this period, rediscovering a sense of community which although still exists in italy has been eroded by globalism. I hope that the Italians will continue to use the small local shops and turn their backs on the multinational big stores. I read that some extremely ignorant doctor in the uk said that for the Italians it’s just a big siesta, firstly siesta is Spanish and secondly people are struggling, He makes out that the italians are lazy, work shy. I’m sure the majority would definately prefer going to work than being stuck in their homes. I would like to see him stay in his house with the anxiety about his aged relatives, worried about the future, about paying the bills, maybe the first few days it is not bad, you watch the tv, catch up on the series you haven’t seen, read a book but then what… Cabin Fever. Time to think about problems, I think at the end of this there will be a lot of people who have to see a psychologist, either that or a divorce lawyer. I know this is nothing compared to what people had to face in the world wars, their suffering was far far greater, all we have to do is stay at home and stay safe, It’s nothing really but at least then there was a real enemy, a concrete ideology to hate (on all sides) now there is an invisible enemy, you can’t see ‘it’ but ‘it’ is there..
