Places to walk

One of the hardest things for me personally with the lockdown is not being able to do a decent walk or run, I know it is a very minor problem though and there are far worse things to worry about (usually at 3.30 am) So to cheer myself I was thinking which walks I would do when we end the lockdown.

Obviously the walk from here up the mule track to the Monti di Trezzone is one, it is the original road up the mountain and is still in great condition thanks to the work of our town hall. From the end of our drive it goes up past our lovely church and up to the village of Aurogna, then through the village and up the narrow stairs to the back of all the buildings many dating back centuries, the cobbled mule track proper starts and winds its way up through the ancient chestnut woods, crossing the road (single track) several times, getting glimpses of the lake every so often, the last section is quite steep and arrives up at the mountain pastures for wonderful views over the lake and up the Valtellina valley.

Aurogns

From there you can walk up through the pastures up to the ‘via monti lariani and in one direction you go across to the monti di Vercana and then still on the ‘via’ walk along the side of the mountains towards Menaggio. The other direction the ‘via’ goes over to the monti di montemezzo and around to eventually arrive down at Sorico. The views are breathtaking, as is the climb up, and it is equal to anything in the Dolomites, just not so famous!

If you want (and you have the energy) you can hike up to the top of the mountains themselves, from here there are views over the lake, the valtellina and valchiavenna and in some areas over towards Switzerland and Lake Lugano, a true 180 view.
